Baby, it’s dark outside.

Baby, it’s dark outside...

A few weeks ago we set back our clocks...

The days got a little (ok, a lot) shorter.

And, life changed - even more for 2020...

Sure, we knew the darkness was coming. We knew that fall and winter would be harder to bear... but, knowing doesn’t make the consequences easier to endure.

So, what can you do in an effort to combat seasonal affective disorder (SAD)? Especially when 2020 has been all about hibernation and staying indoors...

1. Accept you’re going to be more tired.

It’s ok to get more sleep during the winter months.

It’s ok to put your pajamas on early and hop in bed to read a book or watch a movie.

It’s ok to look forward to comfy socks, cozy sweatshirt and fleece blankets.

Allow yourself the time needed to truly let your body recoup and heal.

Oh, and epsom salt baths with tons of essential oils & bath bombs are amazing too!

2. Make plans.

Be it with your family, your partner or by yourself, with your dog - make plans to do activities that interest you.

Take an outdoor hike (regardless of weather) or neighborhood trail.

And, if getting out and doing things isn’t your jam on the current climate, set aside a paint project, put together a family puzzle, play board games or cards.

Grab your favorite take out and eat with a loved one.

But, set an intention to do something you will look forward to doing - and things that will recharge and invigorate you!

3. This seems like and obvious one..., - but, Workout.

Set a workout schedule for the week and stick to it.

Is your goal to get a workout in 3 days a week - maybe 5? Devise a plan.

Where are you training? What do you need? Gather your tools and move your body & work up a sweat.

It will thank you for the push!

4. Get up earlier. Go to bed earlier.

This is one tactic that helps me tremendously. I make sure I’m up for sunrise. Many of you may already be early morning risers, but for those of us who aren’t by nature, making an intent to go to be early and be up when the sunrises give you extra time in the sunshine and that’s exactly what we need when dealing with SAD - more sun.

I hope some of these tactics help you if your experiencing SAD - and if you know a loved one or friend who deals with these issue, please don’t hesitate to share and drop your own helpful tips in the comments below! Would love to hear from you!
